34 YEARS OF PROPER MOTOR CARS ... HOBBY OR OBSESSION? THE HUNT CONTINUES....
BY TERRY MURPHY
I guess it all began in 1954. A family friend (in those days we would call him Uncle) who was a salesman at O'Donnell-Mackie Rolls-Royce and Studebaker in Toronto drove over to our house in a brand new Silver Dawn. He took me for a ride and at 8 years old I was hooked and knew one day I would have to have one. After many years and many cars, in April 1976 I picked up a copy of the British car magazine" Motorsport" at Harry’s News. To my amazement saw that S1 and R type Bentley's (the R type is the Bentley version of the car of my childhood dream the Silver Dawn) were available in the ₤2000 to ₤3000 range. I sold my 3 month old 1976 Camaro (forgive me I was only 29 at the time) hopped on a plane to London (my hometown) and proceeded to look at 25 or 30 cars 1954 R type before purchasing S/N B134WH S/N B134WH a 1954 R type from Morris Stapleton Motors, a Morgan Dealer in London. It arrived safely in Calgary 3 months later. I believe it was about $600 to ship the car from London to Calgary. My how times have changed! All my friends back home thought I was crazy but I loved that car. Over the next year I had the body restored and repainted cream. Rob Manderson has the car now still in that 33 year old paint job. I believe the car went

through 6 or 7 owners before Rob became its current owner. I first met Rob when he gave me a phone call about the car in 1991.
The next episode occurred during a visit to Toronto to see my parents in July of 1978. While visiting a Classic car dealership I fell in love with a 1957 Tudor/Shell Grey Silver Cloud 1, S/N SDD168 and bought it. Upon my return to Calgary I sold the R Type. Shortly after a friend called to see if the car was still available. He knew of someone who was looking for a RollsRoyce or Bentley. I told him it was sold and he mentioned that this person would probably prefer my new 1958 Silver Cloud even more. At that time I was having problems find1957 Silver Cloud 1, S/N SDD168 ing a place to store this car for the winter so when my friend’s contact came to Calgary and offered me a good price I sold it. I was without a “Proper Motor Car” PMC but had a fat bank account. This Silver Cloud I is now owned by Ted Carswell. Between PMC’s I bought a1968 Aston Martin DB6 Vantage and had great fun having it restored and finding a new owner as I really missed owning a Rolls or Bentley. Of all the cars I have owned this economi-
cally would have been the best investment – maybe I should have kept it!
I returned to Toronto the following summer and purchased a Garnet 1956 S1 S/N B233DE and drove it back straight through non -stop to Calgary in two days! I kept that car for three years and sold it at the Okotoks Collector Car Auction. It was purchased by Al Sidorsky who still has the car.

1958 Silver Cloud 1 S/N LSGE460 kept for 14 years. This car won Awards at the Interregional RROC Meet at Expo 86 and at the Monterey RROC National Meet in 1991. This car is currently in Wetaskiwin.
While I still owned the 1958 Silver Cloud 1, I purchased a two Tone Green 1958 Bentley S1 S/N B225FD in Edmonton for parts that I needed for the Cloud. It turned out that this car was salvageable with much help from Reg Collings. That Green car is now apparently in Denver and is and has been repainted White. In 1988 I moved to White Rock B.C. for one year. The day the movers were loading our household possessions to return to Calgary I was arranging to ship my recently purchased 1963 Bentley S3 S/N B138LFG. Once back home in Calgary I received a phone call from David Stocks asking me if I knew of any left hand drive Bentley S3's for sale. My car was in need of much help but David was the right guy for this car as he still has it. Next up was my first venture into modern car ownership. As many of you know I have been employed in Sales at Lone Star Mercedes-Benz for many years. In 1998 a
1958 Bentley S1 S/N B225FD
1963 Bentley S3 S/N B138LFG client wanted to trade in a Peacock Blue 1976 Rolls-Royce LWB Silver Shadow S/N LRE25750 with a blown hydraulic line. I purchased the car from Lone Star, had the hydraulic line replaced and drove the car through the winter. Shadows work quite well and have a great heater even at -30° C. I decided to sell it in the spring as a Shadow without service history is like a time bomb waiting to ruin your bank account. That car is still in Calgary as far as I know. 1976 Rolls-Royce LWB Silver Shadow S/N LRE25750
In 2001, Herb Mills the Sales Representative at the then Rolls-Royce Dealer ClarkeSimpkins (now Bentley Vancouver) told me of a 1984 Dark Oyster Silver Spur for sale in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and he was unable to reach a deal with the seller. About 6 months later I purchased the car in Calgary. It was traded in at the Ford dealer in Prince Albert. That car is now in Wetaskiwin. My next adventure was purchasing a 1989

Windsor Blue Bentley Turbo RL S/N RBK27731 on the internet at Auction in Japan. Turbo RL’s are just too much fun! It is a PMC Hot Rod! You have to get the LWB to have the world's fastest picnic tables! After much reconditioning and cosmetic upgrading I thought I wanted a Continental R Coupe. I mentioned it to Darcy Collings and he asked "Does that mean your Turbo RL is for sale?" We struck a deal. Darcy has since upgraded to a Bentley Arnage and Rob Manderson is now the proud custodian of the
Turbo RL. In 2009 as an avid Internet shopper I found a one family owned 1984 Horse chestnut Silver Spur S/N NAE09938 in New Jersey on EBAY. I was the successful bidder. I was planning to keep the Silver Spur forever until I found on Autotrader.ca a 1990 Bentley Turbo RL S/N PBL33539 in Vancouver. It was imported from Japan 3 years ago and has only 47,000 kilometers. I sold the Spur to our Activities Coordinator Don Casemore, its current custodian.
